CSLD Sweeper Creates Space in the Mail Archive
Paul Hartmann AG
For more than 10 years, Paul Hartmann AG, a global company in the field of medical hygiene and herbal health products, has been archiving successfully, amongst other things, its mail attachments using a combination of IBM DB2 ContentManager and IBM DB2 CommonStore. There was an acute need for action when the number of archived objects reached the 4.5 million mark, which places an increasing burden on the performance of the system environment
An intelligent, powerful solution was needed to reduce the old data. In cooperation with Paul Hartmann AG, FRITZ & MACZIOL developed and realised a two-stage solution, which first of all necessitated an adjustment to the design of the mail databases. When deleting an e-mail some users are now asked whether the associated attachment may also be deleted from the archive.
The second stage of the solution affects the old data in the archive, which is no longer required. Here, FRITZ & MACZIOL installed the filigree configurable application CSLD Sweeper. Its task is to detect the appropriate items and to effect their deletion. As the result of the first productive use, which included all archived items from 1994 to 1998, more than 40,000 entries were successfully removed from the archive. This corresponds to a deletion rate of approximately 60 percent.
Customer benefits
With the two-stage concept, Paul Hartmann AG now has a solution that continually removes files from the e-mail archive, but in spite of this also offers high security against file loss. The results are increased performance, simplified administration and cost reduction.
