VMware solution provides high availability
Hagebau Datendienst IT-Service GmbH, Soltau
The headquarters of the trading company for construction materials in Soltau (Zentrale der Handelsgesellschaft für Baustoffe mbH & Co.KG) - also known as hagebau - looks after more than 250 partners who work independently in such areas as construction materials, wood and tiles as well as DIY markets. Efficient inventory control systems facilitate company operations. These systems were developed by hagebau Datendienst IT service GmbH.
Absolute high availability of the central IT system and an efficient connection to external offices in Austria called for a restructuring of the data processing landscape. At the beginning of the year, a team from the FRITZ & MACZIOL office in Norderstedt set out to implement a VMware system landscape. The objective was not terminal server or citrix installations but virtual desktop infrastructure. For this purpose, staff members have a virtual Windows XP at their disposal and the hosting of clients is taken care of by ESC servers.
To increase availability and minimise downtimes at the same time, the company uses VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3 with the Enterprise Version software component. With an introduction in two computer centres, the solution in the first stage of expansion consisted of two 4-way Dualcore System x3850 servers, each with a memory of 32 GB. The VMware installation was embedded in an EMC DMX/CX infrastructure as SAN storage. In the second stage, two further Dualcore systems were added, each with a memory of 64 GB.
