New Economic Investment in iSeries

Heidenheimer Zeitung

Up-to-date, comprehensive, critical – the Heidenheimer Zeitung offers its readers up-to-date information under this heading with a total of five titles on seven days of the week. Numerous additional services, including two Internet portals, have made the media company the first address for communication with the Heidenheim district.

A factor in the success of the firm, which can trace its history back to 1849, is made clear in the company’s statutes: For the economic security of the company and the jobs of the current 150 employees and around 500 deliverers, an adequate income is essential, taking into consideration the freedom and independence of the press. For this reason, consideration of an expansion of the existing IT landscape is also the focus for those in charge, as the system no longer meets requirements. With the existing configuration of an AS/400 Model 820 and ESS Model F20 Shark, it was not just the disk space that was scarce, but the guarantee period was also running out at the same time. As this concerned the central productive storage system, a new maintenance contract was urgently required.

Taking into account all economic and performance aspects, the Heidenheim company chose new investment. FRITZ & MACZIOL provided the crucial reason. The Ulm experts produced an economic analysis of further use versus purchase of an iSeries and a DS6800 storage system with 4 TB disk space. Particular consideration was also given to maintenance costs for the old system and the energy costs of the ESS.

The result was clear. When considering four years of use, the new storage system was a very attractive new investment with regard to the saving potential in energy and maintenance and additional possibilities.

Since March 2006, the configuration proposed by FRITZ & MACZIOL has been in place and offers the Heidenheim media company very good performance with further options for using the system. And there are sufficient reserves available for the forecasted run time.
