New Feeling for System Management through Virtualisation

Bacardi GmbH, Hamburg

Bacardi GmbH with headquarters in Hamburg – subsidiary of Bacardi Ltd., Bermuda – is one of the leading suppliers of international premium spirits in Germany. The positive corporate development resulted in corresponding growth in the IT landscape. With the result that part of the total of 29 servers were not used to full capacity. To improve this rate, simplify the system management and, at the same time, to reduce costs, Bacardi GmbH planned to centralise hardware resources. The Hanseatic company chose cooperation with FRITZ & MACZIOL for this purpose.
 
The team from the Hamburg office impressed with its virtualisation concept. Those in charge also approved of the calculated cost for the solution. The company is now using a VMware infrastructure 3 solution with three IBM x3650 servers. A DS4700 was installed as an SAN disc subsystem. The migration of the physical machines was effected using P2V and VMware converter. Thus, the customer can quickly set up small systems for test and development without having to procure new hardware. Performance variations can be better intercepted and distributed. FRITZ & MACZIOL successfully completed realisation of the concept in December 2006. For this purpose, the local administrators were comprehensively trained in their own environment and prepared for the new specifications. Since then they have only serviced three of the 24 servers to date.
