Free Ride for High Availability Solution with BladeCenter

Karl Augustin Spedition Logistik & Transport GmbH, Straßwalchen, Austria

Karl Augustin Spedition Logistik & Transport GmbH, located in Straßwalchen, Austria and active internationally, has developed into one of the largest service providers thanks to a consistent campaign of expansion since its foundation in 1974. Almost 1,400 staff now provide an annual turnover of 310 million euros. The motto “everything for the customer” is a challenge for the company that is readdressed daily. The IT department also saw the growing performance problems of the internal IT infrastructure – due to increasing data volumes and additional applications, such as archiving, electronic speed etc. – as a challenge, which they wanted to tackle with external support.

The choice went to the Austria Team of FRITZ & MACZIOL. An important criterion was that FRITZ & MACZIOL presents itself as a complete solution supplier. Moreover, the experts unanimously approved of the process - collecting and analysing the key facts and then preparing and presenting a solution. The aim was to develop a future-oriented concept for five key points: 1. virtualisation of the server, 2. simplification of administration, 3. availability of the IT landscape, 4. improvement of the backup solution and 5. more service from the existing AS400. FuM Austria realised a coherent solution tailored to the requirements in autumn of last year with a configuration of BladeCenter to optimise the hardware and administration, the virtualisation system VMware, a TS3310 IBM Library with Tivoli Storage Manager as backup and migration of the Citrix and Lotus Notes landscape to the latest versions.
The FRITZ & MACZIOL concept also took the important topic of catastrophe precautions into account. Placing the library and the server of the backup system in their own fire compartment provides additional security. The people in charge are drawing favourable conclusions after just a few months of use. The availability and stability of the system have clearly increased, the administration is much simpler and the users are pleased with the noticeable improvement in working speed. Additionally, the hardware resources facilitate variable use for the company. Reducing the maintenance costs is also an important point on the positive list. As a result of the good experience with FRITZ & MACZIOL, the service provider is already considering other possibilities of cooperation. The Austria Team are also to get involved with the planned archive project.
